Wearing the Band
Thanks for nominating me Top Blog #3. It's great to be recognized for a post, and it's especially great when that post is one that I'm proud of. But now comes the extra pressure known as 'The Day After a Top Blog Post'. I'll likely get more readers today than normal, as I'm being advertised in a spot that many folks see. Will I step up to the challenge? Probably not, although I still think this post will be funny. And like yesterday's, it's rooted in truth.
I've noticed lately that those wrist bands that it seemed liked almost everyone was wearing are really being worn by almost everyone. It's no longer about the cause; it's about being trendy. Being someone who's had one of the Live Strong bands since the beginning, I was feeling a little off about the message being lost. But I was also blindly following along, wearing up to 3 bands at the peak of my band-wearing run. After my Live Strong band snapped a couple months ago, I decided that it was time to give up the bands. I did that for a few weeks but recently decided I was just going to wear one, and it wasn't going to celebrate a cause, but celebrate the geek culture that I have embraced. I dug into my bands and found the black Think Geek one. On my arm it went. And here is the coversation that occurred the next morning in my office.
Co-worker 1: Hey, AAP. What's that band for?
AAP: Oh, it says 'Think Geek' on it.
Co-worker 1: Really? That's different.
Co-worker 2: Unbelievable.
AAP: What?
Co-worker 2: Each day you come up with new reasons for women to ignore you.
AAP: I like to give them options.
