The Battle of Serenity Valley
Today is the day.
18 months after the initial rumblings of a movie. 3 years almost to the day since a small, yet disturbingly devoted group of fans rallied together after the ratings for the second episode of Firefly came back and they didn't look so good. 5 years after the creator made some off-hand comment that he was shopping around a new show that he was more excited about than anything else in his career.
Today, the next chapter in this story of the show that just wouldn't go away unfolds before us. Serenity opens in theaters.
To all of you out there that are not fans of this type of movie. Thank you. Thank you for putting up with me for the last few months. I know you don't want to see it. I tried. I'll leave you be shortly.
To all of you out there that are not sure if they want to see the movie or not but are a little interested. Please, please, please see it this weekend. Yes, it will probably be around in many theaters for 4 - 6 weeks. Unfortunately, tinsletown execs only care about the first two weekends. If we are going to get to experience any more stories set in this 'verse, we need to hit now. And Thank you.
To all of you out there that are fans. Either you watched the show when it aired on Fox, or you were one of the hundreds of thousands that picked up a DVD set, or you started watching it on the Sci-Fi Channel this summer; thank you. But now our work begins again. We need to hit the movie multiple times this weekend and at least once next weekend. These two weekends are going to decide the fate of it all. 2 good weekends now and we get 2 more movies and who knows what else later. We don't show up now, and it's all over. This is Firefly's third chance to make an impact. That's 3 more than most entertainment properties get. Let's not let them down.
I think it is clear to everyone that I'm looking forward to this movie more than any other movie in recent history; maybe ever. I also feel close to the project. I feel that if it fails, then I've failed. Right or wrong, that's how I feel. Promoting Firefly and Serenity has been a little side hobby of mine for 3 years now. I'd like to keep doing it for another 3.
But truly, today it is about the movie. Even if it all ends with this movie, at least I got to see this movie. It is still mind-boggling that a show that didn't have a chance on network television is now a $50 million major motion picture. As long as I see the movie today, I can die a happy man, having accomplished some great things in my life.
Wait a minute. That's not entirely true. I still have to eat BBQ Pringles off the back of a nude woman from New Zealand.
Only then will I have accomplished something great.
