Clearly Not 21
The reason I asked how old I looked a few days ago is because I had a few interesting situations on my vacation last week. I went out to eat several times with my parents. We had those meals at restaurants located at Walt Disney World. My parents always have a bottle of wine with a sit-down meal, so wine accompanied every one of these meals. WDW has a strict policy of not serving alcohol to anyone under 21. Yeah, that's the law, but I think they take it one step further and won't serve to a minor even with their parent's permission (which is legal).
At each and every meal, the server either never brought me a wine glass or removed my wine glass from the table if it was set there ahead of time. I was never asked. Each time I fell into the "clearly not 21" demographic. If you appear to be close to 21, they ask how many wine glasses will be necessary or ask before taking away the wine glass. Nope; not for me, because I'm clearly not 21.
I also got a chance to meet one of my dad's supervisors at his part-time job. The next day he asked her how old she thought I was. She said, "Oh, he looks about 25." My dad congratulated her and said she had guessed closer than most people do. She then admitted that she had raised her estimate because she could tell by the way that my dad asked that that's what he was going for. If in a situation where she wouldn't have been prompted like that, she said she would have guessed that I was 19.
For the record... I'm 29. I don't have a problem looking younger than I am. I know this is going to pay off in the long run, but it would be nicer if I at least looked 21. It is starting to affect things, even though I don't even drink.
Try building a house when you look like you are 16 years old. I got laughed out of many builder's offices. I only got decent responses when I started bringing my parents with me. In those cases the builders thought the house was for my dad and I was just tagging along.
Try renting a car when the legal age for renting a vehicle is 25 years old unless it is for business purposes. I have to prove that I'm employed and I'm renting for business travel every time I go to pick up the car. For whatever reason, they won't just take the age on my driver's license as valid.
Try hitting on a 33 year old woman (who is in my age range) when I look 19. Trust me. 33 year old women are not interested in 19 year old men, even if they are 29.
On the plus side, I can order off the children's menu and save $3!
